In heterogeneous catalysis, mixed metal oxides (MMOs) play a vital role because of their versatile chemical as well as physical properties and a wide range of applications in the field of catalysis and technology. Mixed metal oxides represent an important class of solid support catalysts, either as active phases or supports. Due to the versatile nature of MMOs catalyst, it can be applied for their acid-base and redox properties simultaneously. Gawande et al. reported synthesis of heterogeneous, versatile nano-magnesia-zirconia or MgO–ZrO2 (MZ) catalyst by  ultra-dilution method. The catalytic activity of MZ catalyst successively demonstrated for various important organic transformations such as cross-aldol condensation, N-benzyloxy carbonylation of amines, reduction of aromatic nitro compounds, and synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepines. The MgO-ZrO2 catalyst developed from inexpensive precursors which has high surface area and are reusable and recyclable for all reactions.

Gawande et al. research article entitled “An efficient and expeditious Fmoc protection of amines and amino acids in aqueous media” published in Green Chemistry, 2011.
17.10.2011

In this research work, a new and environmentally friendly Fmoc protection of a variety of aliphatic and aromatic amines, amino acids, amino alcohols, and amino phenols in aqueous media under mild and catalyst-free conditions is reported. The reaction proved to be chemoselective in presence of ambident nucleophiles. The novel developed method is highly efficient and environmentally benign owing to the mild conditions, high yields, excellent chemoselectivity, ease of product isolation and purification which fulfill the criterion for a green chemistry practice. The main focus of this research article is the protection of amino acid in solution or solid-phase synthesis as well as in the synthesis of important drug intermediates.
